I’ve always been a bit skeptical of how much actual power can be delivered from an LED. A driving motivator behind Independent Innovations and the products I’m working on is bringing confidence to products where it feels lacking to me. I formerly didn’t have confidence in the red-light therapy products available such that I made my own devices long ago. I wrote a bit more background on this in a Medium article. However, as the performance was by design and not calibration, I didn’t have confidence in what I was making. It still took a bit of a leap of faith, and as it wasn’t a given the user used it properly, it really was a leap of faith. The market really felt like the wild-west, and I wasn’t interested in scaling up what was just another untamed variant in this market. I couldn’t prove what I was delivering, and it just seemed like wishful thinking.
That’s what motivates me on each of the three active projects associated with Independent Innovations:
- Rejuv, which is my latest red / NIR device that will provide a NIST traceable output and an ability to specify the amount of energy that will be output in J/cm^2, the same units as used by researchers and medical journals
- OptiVerity, is a product that allows for measuring the irradiance and verify the output of your existing red / NIR devices.
- My interest in Rate of Force Development (RFD) is still in the works, but it’s another area where measurement can bring clarity, focused on the longevity market
Each of these is focused on measurement and clarity — because without that, you’re just hoping.
